SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital begin 2-day strike today

ST. LOUIS - Union nurses at SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital are beginning a two-day strike on Wednesday.It starts at 7:00 a.m. In a statement, SSM Health says it has a plan in place to ensure there is no disruption in hospital care. They plan to bring in nurses from staffing agencies to fill in. The union says it gave the hospital notice of the strike on December 15 so that it could prepare. Check the radar: Storm system returns, this time with snow  'National Nurses United' has been in negotiations for a new labor agreement with SSM since May. They're concerned about patient care,  safe staffing, and workplace violence.They held a 24-hour strike in September.

Asian elephant 'Raja' celebrates 31st birthday today

ST. LOUIS - Wednesday is Raja the elephant's 31st birthday, and possibly his last at the St. Louis Zoo.Raja will be leaving for the Columbus Zoo, where he'll help raise a new family of elephants. Raja was the first elephant born at the St. Louis Zoo. In years past, they've given him gifts and watermelons to play with and stomp on. Zoo visitors got birthday cupcakes and a chance to sign a birthday card for Raja.Last year's party, on the other hand, was cancelled due to cold weather.

Jefferson County deputy injured after confronting stolen car suspect

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. - A Jefferson County deputy was injured after confronting a suspect over a stolen vehicle on Tuesday night.The deputy, who has not been identified, was called to Harness Road near Festus to check out a possible stolen vehicle. That's when the officer confronted a suspect outside of his home. Powerball produces big wins for two people in Missouri over holiday weekend Investigators said that the two struggled over the deputy's weapon. At least one shot was fired, but no one was hit.Both the suspect and the officer are being treated for minor injuries from the fight. The vehicle at the home was later confirmed stolen.

'Mr. Curry's' vacant restaurant fire under investigation

ST. LOUIS - Another fire overnight damaged a closed restaurant in downtown St. Louis.That was at 'Mr. Curry's' restaurant on Olive Street, near North 6th Street. It's been closed for some time for building renovations and COVID. Powerball produces big wins for two people in Missouri over holiday weekend Firefighters believe that homeless people broke in and started a fire to keep warm. No one was inside when the firefighters arrived.FOX 2 will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

Crews investigating house fire in Bevo neighborhood

ST. LOUIS - A fire heavily damaged a house overnight in south St. Louis.It started just after midnight on Newport Avenue near Taft Avenue in the Bevo neighborhood. Check the radar: Storm system returns, this time with snow  Firefighters said that there was a heavy fire in the house because the residents were hoarders, filling the house with flammable items.

St. Louis weather from Meteorologist Angela Hutti:ST. LOUIS - A slow-moving storm will bring a mix of rain and snow to the St. Louis region on Wednesday. This starts as rain but will mix with some snow as temperatures drop a few degrees. Because the ground is still warm and air temperatures will be above freezing, most of what falls will melt on contact. Some short bursts of snow may be intense enough to allow for some slushy buildups on lesser-traveled roads, especially west and southwest of metro St. Louis.
